Red Sox take Braves series, Youk traded to the other Sox, Sox must make room for returning players

Today the Red Sox notched their second victory over the Atlanta Braves to take the series. After dropping the first game, the Sox have put up the offense to bring the Sox above the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL East standings.

Some rather sad news today, Kevin Youkilis has been traded Chicago White Sox for infielder/outfielder, Brent Lillibridge, and RHP Zach Stewart. For a while now, it’s been floating around that Youkilis would be traded due to Middlebrooks performance since joining the roster. In addition, Josh Beckett is on the DL due to a right shoulder inflammation which promoted Clay Mortensen. Ryan Sweeney was placed on the DL because of a fractured toe. Scott Podsednik might return in  early July after straining his left groin. Then most recently Daniel Bard has been placed back in the bullpen, while Daisuke Matsuzaka has returned from his Tommy John surgery and replaced him after Bard’s last horrible outing that demoted him to the Triple-A to fix his control and command. Clay Buchholz was additionally placed on the DL on June 24th because of gastrointestinal issues. Ellsbury and Crawford as well as Andrew Bailey are possibly returning to the Red Sox in July too and the Sox need to figure out the outfield as Ryan Kalish and Nava have been great contributions after being called up.

Surprisingly before the Red Sox took on the Atlanta Braves, the Red Sox held the Miami Marlins to five runs each game.  In the first game, Ortiz and Shoppach both hit two run home runs to power the Sox in the 7-5 win. Also Cody Ross had his own solo shot as well. Buchholz unfortunately  gave up five runs after claiming he wanted the extra day for rest. In the second game, Ortiz blasted a grand slam, Aviles belted a three-run homer, Middlebrooks blasted a two-run shot, then Saltalamacchia hit a solo shot as well. All four people managed to hit every home run possible in the blowout game against the Marlins. In addition, Nava had a four hit night and Ross had a three-run double. Doubront didn’t give a stellar performance, but managed to receive the win anyway. Middlebrooks saved the Red Sox in the last game versus the Miami Marlins when he tied the game 5-5 in the 8th with a two run homer. Then Nava got the go-ahead RBI and Aceves came out to have a 1-2-3 inning.

Concerning the Braves series, the Red Sox managed to hold the Braves to four runs each game and took two out of three. Tomorrow the Blue Jays roll into town for an AL East battle. The Red Sox will looking to Doubront (8-3, 4.31 ERA) to keep the Red Sox ahead and lower the games behind the AL East leaders, New York Yankees, presently. He will be against Henderson Alvarez (3-6, 4.30 ERA). The game begins on NESN at 7.10pm from Fenway Park.

Take care Youk and thanks for everything you’ve done for the Red Sox. Hope you enjoy the new Sox.

Red Sox take on Marlins again at Fenway

The Boston Red Sox take on the Miami  Marlins after a series with Theo Epstein’s, the former Red Sox manager, Chicago Cubs. Previously the Red Sox won two out of three from the Miami  Marlins on Marlins’ turf. The Sox look to continue winning against Beckett’s former team tonight at Fenway Park. The game begins at 7.10pm on NESN.

In recent news, Kalish has been promoted to the Red Sox’s roster after Sweeney hit the DL due to continued soreness in the sesamoid bone in his left foot. In the 53 games Kalish played in 2010, he was hitting .252 with four homers and 24 RBIs.

Over the weekend, the Red Sox were able to take two out of three games against the Chicago Cubs by sporting a 0-3 loss on Friday, but bouncing back with a 4-3 win Saturday and 7-4 win Sunday on Father’s Day. Matsuzaka had his second start of the season in the Cubs series debut. While he was rather shaky, Daisuke had a decent start going six innings, giving up four hits and three runs, and striking out three. However the Red Sox bats weren’t producing hits and ultimately lead to the loss and the series sweep to the Nationals for the beginning of interleague play in the second weekend of June. But the real news is Morales start on Father’s Day in replacement of Josh Beckett. Morales went five innings, threw 80 pitches, gave up two runs on four hits and struck out nine batters! Luckily he received some early run support from Pedroia and Ortiz and later the Red Sox tacked on four runs among the 7th and 8th innings to keep the victory in Sox hands.

Right now the Red Sox are back at .500 baseball and are right games behind the AL East leaders, New York Yankees. No other AL East team is above .600 besides the New York Yankees. Baltimore is close behind with just two and half games out. It’s almost July, the Red Sox really need to get these bats going and hit more consistently. Tonight Buchholz (7-2, 5.38 ERA) goes against Mark Buerhle (5-7, 3.41 ERA).

Red Sox win 2-1 behind Buchholz, tonight’s game available for free on MLB.TV

The Red Sox won last night against the Miami Marlins. The Sox picked up a much needed 2-1 win behind Clay Buchholz. Buchholz went seven innings, allowed five hits, just one run, and struck out nine batters. In addition, his last four starts has placed his ERA at a wonderful 1.45. Middlebrooks, Shoppach, and Aviles were the three people who got to the Marlins’ pitching. Shoppach brought home Middlebrooks to score the first run of the night and later Aviles singled to bring home Shoppach to make 2-0 Sox in the 7th. Buchholz gave up the only run of the night to the opposing team in the bottom of the 7th off of a solo shot.

Tonight’s game will be available for free on MLB.TV; however blackout and other restrictions do apply. The game begins at 7.10pm on NESN and will feature Felix Doubront (6-3, 4.34 ERA) and Ricky Nolasco (6-4, 4.36 ERA) on the mound.

Red Sox swept by Nats; head to Miami to start week long road trip

Matthew J. Lee/ Globe Staff
Bobby Valentine has some choice words for Al Porter in the ninth. Valentine, who was ejected, thought the umpiring was substandard all series.

The Red Sox unfortunately were swept at home by the Nationals. The Nationals pitching just happened to be better and limited the Red Sox offense. Yesterday was rather disappointing though. The umpire’s call on Aceves’ pitch in the 9th would’ve saved the Red Sox from the Nationals’ go-ahead run. The ball three call was in fact strike three, then Pedroia received a strike three call to end the game on a pitch that was outside the box and a even worse call than Aceves’ miss-called pitch. Bobby Valentine even got ejected. Tonight the Red Sox go on the road to Miami to take on the newly named Marlins. the game will start at 7.10pm on NESN and on ESPN for those who are outside of NESN’s broadcasting.

Clay ‘Complete Game’ Buchholz amazing against Orioles, Matsuzaka makes season debut with Red Sox this afternoon against Nationals

On the last day against the Os, the Boston Red Sox pulled themselves back up after two losses in a row, one 6-8 Tuesday and the other 1-2 Wednesday. Behind Clay Buchholz, the Red Sox had a complete game, taking the last game 7-0. Buchholz received his 4th complete game against the Orioles. His previous complete games have all coincidentally been against the Orioles. Buchholz pitched all nine innings, obviously allowing no runs on 125 pitches, gave up just four hits and struck out six and walked one. That one walk came in the 9th, but Clay retired the next three batters to receive the win. Additionally, no Orioles ever went beyond 2nd base.

The Red Sox pounded out seven runs to help Clay out. The Sox busted out two runs each in the first three innings to put them up 6-0 until Youkilis’ double in the 8th that scored Nava and added another run to make it 7-0. In the bottom of the 1st, with the bases loaded Adrian Gonzalez belted a double to right field which scored Pedroia and Youkilis. Then in the bottom of the 2nd, Pedroia grounded a force out that allowed McDonald and Shoppach to score and due to Robert Andino’s throwing error and Nava’s out, Pedroia advanced to 2nd base. However no more runs were to be scored that inning. In the next inning, Daniel Nava connected on a change-up and hit a single to right field and scored Adrian Gonzalez and Darnell McDonald.

Then last night, the Red Sox unfortunately fell to the Strasburg and the Washington Nationals in the first interleague play series since the Red Sox took on the Phillies a few weeks back. The 4-7 loss gave Strasburg his 7th win putting him up to 7-1, while Doubront is now 6-3.

Daisuke Matsuzaka #18 of the Boston Red Sox throws before a game against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park April 18, 2012 in Boston, Massachusetts. Tazawa was called from AAA Pawtucket Red Sox.

But the important news right now is the return of Daisuke Matsuzaka this afternoon against the Washington Nationals. Dice-K, who has been absent from the roster because of his Tommy John surgery, will make his first appearance in a year to the day of his actual surgery date. His last appearance at Fenway Park was May 16, 2011. So far in this last three starts in the minors, Dice-K is 0-3 with 30 strikeouts. In his last start he threw 5.1 innings and gave up only one hit and no walks compared to his first rehab start where he only last 1.1 innings after throwing 40 pitches, allowing three hits and two walks. Matsuzaka is starting in replacement of Daniel Bard, who was moved to Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox due to his 5-6, 5.24 ERA, and loss of his command.

Today he will go against Gio Gonzalez (7-2, 2.31 ERA) and the Nationals at 4.05pm from Fenway Park. The game will be held on NESN.

Red Sox fall 8-6 to Orioles, look to Beckett to take down AL East leaders

Elise Amendola/Assoiated Press

After Bard’s last outing, he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. Meanwhile Darnell McDonald is back and so is Pedroia with his brace. The Red Sox unfortunately lost last night’s game in extra innings after an amazing game-tying home run from Jarrod Saltalamacchia in the bottom of the 9th. The Red Sox eventually fell 8-6 to the AL East leaders the Baltimore Orioles. Aceves received the loss after giving up two runs in the top of the 10th inning. Lester was alright allowing four runs over six innings and striking out five.

Baltimore got to Lester first and scored two runs in the top of the 3rd on back-to-back singles by Adam Jones and Matt Wieters. Boston finally got on board after a sacrifice bunt by Podsednik which scored Nava. Afterwards, Pedroia hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Aviles and tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the 5th. But unfortunately Steve Pearce kept the Orioles on top with his sacrifice fly which scored Wieters to make it 3-2 Orioles.

Then Aviles tied it up in the bottom of the 6th on his single and Podsednik gave the Red Sox the lead with his sacrifice fly that scored Nava. Lester gave up a single in the top of the 7th to Endy Chavez to then be replaced by Scott Atchinson, who proceeded to give the Orioles the lead. Atchinson gave up two back-to-back singles which scored one run. He then threw a wild pitched and walked Matt Wieters intentionally. Albers also gave up back-to-back singles to Mark Reynolds and Steve Pearce before getting the last out of the inning. The Orioles led the game 6-4.

With David Ortiz on base and two outs, Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit the seventh pitch by Jim Johnson and miraculously tied the game with his two-run home run and brought the Red Sox back in the game.

Well then Aceves blew it. But it was looking like an amazing comeback win last night.

The Red Sox take on the Orioles again tonight at 7.10pm on NESN from Fenway Park with Josh Beckett (4-5, 4.26 ERA) and Wei-Yin Chen (4-2, 3.75 ERA) on the mound.

Red Sox win Tigers and Blue Jays series before heading into Orioles series and interleague play this week

The Red Sox took three out of four games against the Detroit Tigers and since then the Boston Red Sox has won two out of three against the Toronto Blue Jays. They are now again tied for 4th place with Toronto in the AL East as they both sit 3.0 games behind Tampa Bay.

Jon Lester put up a nice performance on the second to last day of May. He struggled early, but managed to stay strong for the rest and of the game as Aceves notched his 13th save. Gonzalez, Ortiz, Middlebrooks, and Youkilis were all part of the offense. Ortiz scored Gonzalez on a home run after Gonzo hit a ground rule double. Later Youk hit a single, which was followed by a two run shot by Middlebrooks. Then in the 8th, Youkilis hit a solo run to make the score 6-4. The Red Sox won three games in a row against the Tigers. However, the Red Sox fell the next day to the Tigers 4-7.

Boston then went on to win the next two games against the Toronto Blue Jays on the road. The first game won 7-2 on Friday behind Clay Buchholz. Buchholz was absolutely amazing, going 8 innings, throwing 108 pitches, only allowing two runs, and striking out seven batters. Nava and Podsednik are fitting in extremely well in the lineup. That night Podsednik hit an RBI single and Nava hit an RBI double in the 7th inning. Atchinson also is doing well with 0.89 ERA as he had a scoreless 9th to secure the 7-2 win.

The next day Doubront gave the Red Sox another win 7-4. Nava, Middlebrooks, Punto and Sweeney all provided the offense. Albers, Miller, Padilla, and then Aceves came out for the save. Padilla struggled, but fortunately Saltalamacchia threw a great throw to third which got out Lawrie as he attempted to steal third.

Today, the Boston Red Sox dropped the last game to the Blue Rays in a 1-5 loss at the hands of Bard. It started early with a three run homer by Jose Bautista which scored Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar in the bottom of the 1st. Later in the bottom of the 2nd, Bard walked Colby Rasmus and J.P. Arencibia. But then got Rajai Davis with a swinging strike out and Kelly Johnson out on strikes. Bard proceeded to hit Escobar, which advanced both Rasmas and Arencibia and loaded the bases. Bautista then walked to score a run and additionally, Encarnacion was hit by a pitch to score the fifth run for Toronto. Morales replaced Bard and later there were appearances by Atchinson and Hill. Shoppach received the only RBI for the Red Sox this afternoon which was a solo shot in the top of the 5th.

The Red Sox have the day off tomorrow, but will take on Baltimore Orioles in a three game series back at Fenway Park on Tuesday before the Red Sox take on the Washington Nationals over the weekend. In other news, McDonald might be activated and ready by Tuesday and Youkilis’ name is appearing in trade rumors as Middlebrooks (.314 with six homers, 22 RBIs and a .559 slugging percentage, since May 2nd) and Youkilis (.314 with a .543 slugging percentage, since May 22nd) hold similar stats. Pedroia is also taking batting practice and is feeling good about it in hopes to re-join the roster and avoid the disabled list.
