Sox lose 6-4 late in the game, closing out Royals series tonight; Matsuzaka rehabbing with PawSox

It was looking like the Red Sox would come away with another win against the Royals, but a late inning 3-run homer by Butler shot down a repeat win for the Red Sox. Once again Bobby Valentine left Bard in longer than he should have been in. Bard had two balks, one of which gave the Royals a run, in one inning in the bottom of the 2nd. The Red Sox were ahead 2-0, but after Bard gave up a run from a balk and then two RBI singles, the Red Sox then trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 2nd. Pedroia tied up the game in the top of the 4th on a single that scored Mike Aviles. The Red Sox took the lead in the top of the 5th when Gonzalez reached home because of a throwing error, making it 4-3. The Sox were fine until the 8th inning when Bobby Valentine decided to keep Bard in. Bard walked the first two batters which set up Albers to give the Royals the leading runs in the form of a 3-run shot to center field. Well that was the game as the remaining Sox batters flied out and grounded out to end it.

The series ends tonight with Lester (1-2, 4.62 ERA) and Chen (0-4, 4.98 ERA) taking the mound before the Red Sox head back home. The game begins at 8.10pm again on NESN.

Also in other news Middlebrooks was taken out of last night’s game because of hamstring tightness. He said that it’s not serious, but he wanted to make sure everything was fine (which is good considering we don’t have Youk at the moment, but Middlebrooks is a great fill-in). Also Matsuzaka had his first rehab game a couple days back and threw 4 2/3 innings in a Pawtucket Red Sox game and allowed only 2 hits, 3 walk and struck out 4 batters. His pitches even reached up 91 mph. Matsuzaka’s next game will be on Saturday from McCoy Stadium.
