Lots of news for the Red Sox. Red Sox has promoted their top prospect, Will Middlebrooks. The 23 year old is a third baseman with power and was added to the 25-man roster today. Therefore, Lars Anderson was optioned to Triple-A in Pawtucket. Middlebrooks was ranked No. 1 in the Red Sox’s Top 20 Prospects list and was chosen in the fifth round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft. In 93 at-bats with Triple-A Pawtucket, he has a .333 batting average, nine home runs and 27 RBIs in 24 games. Middlebrooks makes his appearance tonight in the eighth spot.
In addition, Valentine has pushed back Beckett’s start a day and will have Aaron Cook on the mound on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles in his first major league debut. Saturday’s game will certainly be interesting and a must-watch.
All that and the Red Sox have also signed Mark Prior. The 31 year old right-hander is known to have been third in voting for the 2003 Cy Young award when he was with the Chicago Cubs going 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA and 245 strikeouts over 211 innings. However, he was plagued with shoulder injuries and since then has only pitched in 24 innings in two minor league affiliates associated with the Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. This past April, Prior did work out with the Red Sox.
